Information for Owners of Vehicles with Methane Systems (CNG, SDG, Natural Gas)

Dear friends!

This post is for vehicle owners with methane (natural gas, SDG, CNG) gas systems who have already faced — or may face within the next 10 months — an unpleasant situation during the technical inspection.

As of July 1, a law has come into force requiring mandatory inspection of high-pressure cylinders. If the cylinder’s validity is not confirmed by an authorized institution, you will receive a “3” mark during the inspection — and “win” a trip on a tow truck for yourself and your car.

Why was this introduced?

Methane systems operate at 200 bar pressure and, over time, become dangerous (due to corrosion, micro-damage), which is why the government requires their regular inspection.

How to tell which system you have

  1. Check your last refuelling receipt or your vehicle registration certificate (back side).

  2. If your registration says:

    • Benzīns un NAFTAS gāze — this is LPG, all good.

    • Benzīns un DABAS gāze or SNG gāze — this is methane, you need to take action.

  3. In the receipt:

    • Amount in liters — LPG, no problem.

    • Amount in kilograms — methane, you will need to resolve this before inspection.

What CNG owners can expect

  • Inspection: €50–€100 (chance of extension — only 2–3%).

  • Replacement of 1 cylinder: ~€1000 (5 cylinders = €5000).

  • After 4 years — another inspection.

  • Profitability — zero, lots of headaches.

Alternative

  • Removal of methane equipment: €200–€300.

  • Replacement with LPG (safer, cheaper, easier to repair): from €1200.
